Noah Jacob Moses Aaron/Psalm 132 David Maccabees Presentation Anointing Easter 1 Peter |
Black, white, raven, dove An olive branch with green, brown Rainbows bless the earth. Jacob dreaming, wakes, Burning bush, bare feet, Oil flows down the beards Shepherd and Warrior, Light shines through the nights. Two doves in his place, Woman offers oil Come to offer oil Bless these hearts of stone, |
The first anointing in the Torah is by Jacob, of a rock. This foreshadows the anointing of the
Temple in Leviticus, and of priests and Kings.
In the New Testament this story is taken up in the story of the names of Christ and Peter (The
Anointed and the Rock) in both Matthew and John. Perhaps in 1 Cor when Paul says "The Rock
was the Anointed." And when Peter speaks of the Church as living stones building a Temple of
God.
These can perhaps be pulled together with other Temple sayings and explain soke of the appeal of
Christianity; by promising a new Temple not made of Human hands, the earliest Christians
appealed to those who believed the Temple was corrupt. They appealed to the Samaritans, who
worshipped on their own mountain. And when Jerusalem was destroyed, they appealed to those
who had had faith in the Temple, offering them a way to keep their devotion through a new
Temple, without forgetting the old.
